{"id":12765,"date":"2018-02-24T19:41:51","date_gmt":"2018-02-25T03:41:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/getlighthouse.com\/blog\/?p=12765"},"modified":"2024-07-18T14:24:31","modified_gmt":"2024-07-18T14:24:31","slug":"high-performing-leaders-secret","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/getlighthouse.com\/blog\/high-performing-leaders-secret\/","title":{"rendered":"What's the Secret Habit of High Performing Leaders?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you hear \"Lebron James,\u201d you think superstar athlete.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, how about <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high performing leader?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rarely do people make <a href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/worlds-greatest-leaders\/lebron-james-11\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the connection<\/a> between James and big tech CEOs like Jeff Bezos and Brian Chesky.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Fortune Magazine highlighted all of these men in their <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/fortune.com\/worlds-greatest-leaders\/lebron-james-11\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2017's World's Greatest Leaders list.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The magazine realized that they shared a common trait: they invested in themselves first and foremost.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Consistent, high performance\u00a0takes effort and focus.<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Habits coach <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/brendon-burchard\/what-is-high-performance_b_7153652.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brendon Burchard<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> defines high-performance as, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\"[the ability to succeed] above and beyond standard norms over the long-term.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High performing leaders achieve great success in even extraordinary circumstances. They master their mind, emotions, and time to get the best out of themselves and their team.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Former Olympic and NBA championship teammate Richard Jefferson told <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/espnradio\/play?id=18399932\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ESPN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about Lebron James's growth mindset:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\"He never wants to feel comfortable; he always wants to feel uncomfortable. And I think that's what pushes him, that's part of the reason <strong>why he's so great is that he's never in a mode like, 'OK, this is a good place to be.'<\/strong><\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He's, you know, 'OK, where can I go next? Where can I go next? I have to keep pushing and striving for another level of greatness.' Because he knows that that's [the] only way to achieve what he wants to achieve.\"<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h4><strong>James seeks constant improvement. <\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to legendary tennis coach Bob Brett, one trait separates average players from sports champions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an interview with <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.tpacanada.com\/sites\/default\/files\/Coaching%20High%20Performance_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rotman Magazine,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Brett claims that high performing leaders like James are pushing themselves beyond expectations to strengthen their skills.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interestingly, Brett\u00a0noticed the same dedication in business executives:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\"In life, you're going to hit a lot of walls. When the best performers hit a wall, they see it as an opportunity to learn and grow. In business, on the long and complicated road up, if you aren't a learner, you won't get very far.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But unlike athletes, senior\u00a0leaders don't have off-seasons. You're expected to perform at your best 8+ hours a day,\u00a05-7\u00a0days a week, for decades.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This pressure can be exhausting. However, if you adopt the effective coping and growth strategies from elite athletes, you can better maintain and improve your work\u00a0to become a high performing leader, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/getlighthouse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/burnout-paper-head.jpg\" alt=\"high performing leaders\" width=\"503\" height=\"467\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<h2><b>Avoid the Burnout Epidemic<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\"Employee burnout has reached epidemic proportions,\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said Charlie DeWitt, the VP of business development at Kronos. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kronos.com\/resource\/download\/17966\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kronos's survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> claimed that almost half of HR managers blame burnout for a good portion of their annual workforce turnover.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.apa.org\/helpcenter\/labor-day.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">American Psychological Association (APA)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> revealed that job stress cost U.S. businesses about $300 billion per year, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\"through absenteeism, diminished productivity, employee turnover and direct medical, legal and insurance fees.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is why the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.maltachamber.org.mt\/en\/workplace-stress-health-epidemic-of-the-21st-century\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Health Organisation (WHO)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0has called work burnout as the <em>\"health epidemic of the 21st century.\u201d<\/em><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sadly, managers and leaders are the ones most likely to suffer burnout.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The article, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/1996\/07\/when-executives-burn-out\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\"When Executives Burnout,\"<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> explains that managers and CEOs have a lot of important, but stressful duties contributing to it:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Establish goals and prioritizes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accept and deflect hostility<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Resolve employee conflicts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tolerate insensitive personalities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improve brand reputation<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/1996\/07\/when-executives-burn-out\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CEO of an electric company<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> confessed his frustrations after a scandal put him in the center of many challenges:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><i><\/i><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\"In my present role, I'm the guy who catches it all. I can't seem to get people to stand still and listen, and I can't continue to take all the hostility that goes with it\u2014the crank calls, being woken up late at night and called names. I don't know how much longer I can last in this job.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Examples like this are why leadership roles are often called, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/SB10001424127887323687604578469124008524696\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\"the loneliest in the business.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/getlighthouse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Crazy-calendar.png\" alt=\"high performing leaders get their schedule under control\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Leaders need <a href=\"https:\/\/getlighthouse.com\/blog\/take-a-break-manager\/\">a break.<\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When leaders can't handle stress, they tend to lash out at their employees. These negative attitudes kill their chances of becoming high performing leaders, and creates a cycle of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/getlighthouse.com\/blog\/break-vicious-cycle-reactive-management\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reactive management.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2012\/07\/how-damaging-is-a-bad-boss-exa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">graph shows<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a positive correlation between employee engagement and supervisor effectiveness.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/getlighthouse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/EMPLOYEE-ENGAGEMENT.png\" alt=\"high performing leaders\" title=\"\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you can see, low employee satisfaction, engagement, and commitment are directly correlated to having a poor manager. Meanwhile, great leaders appear to lead happier, more engaged employees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How can these exhausted managers change for the better? Like their workers, they're victims of intense demands.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The solution then is transforming how managers prioritize their well-being.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter \" src=\"https:\/\/media.giphy.com\/media\/l1BgRBINM7orbfM3K\/giphy.gif\" alt=\"high performing leaders\" width=\"549\" height=\"309\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<h2><b>Get in <em>The Zone<\/em><\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most managers don't see themselves as athletes, but\u00a0you should.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the article, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2001\/01\/the-making-of-a-corporate-athlete\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\"The Making of a Corporate Athlete,\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> performance experts Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz argue that executives have the same (if not, higher) work demands as athletes.\u00a0B<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oth desire to maintain high-performance in extreme and changing circumstances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, only one group seeks to maintain and increase its ideal performance state (IPS).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/vuir.vu.edu.au\/7700\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\"The Zone: Evidence of a Universal Phenomenon for Athletes Across Sports,\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> researchers defined IPS as:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\"a state in which an athlete performs to the best of his or her ability. It is a magical and\u2026special <\/span><\/i><b><i>place where performance is exceptional and consistent, automatic and flowing<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. An athlete [can] ignore all the pressures and let his or her body deliver the performance that has been learned so well. Competition is fun and exciting.\"<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study surveyed 59 athletes from a variety of sports and concluded that they all performed best when they were in IPS or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\"the zone.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They felt confident, focused, and relaxed even during intense pressure. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If they can reach IPS, high performing leaders can also work at their best.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, most managers will never achieve such a state as they fail to properly care for their well-being.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/getlighthouse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/keep-calm.png\" alt=\"high performing leaders take care of themselves\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<h1><b>High performing leaders take care of themselves<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2001\/01\/the-making-of-a-corporate-athlete\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\"The Making of a Corporate Athlete,\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Loehr and Schwartz\u00a0state that high performing leaders take care of their body, emotions, mind, and spirit. Starting with yourself is essential to your success.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, former teammate <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/2661150-whats-the-secret-to-lebron-james-athletic-invincibility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mike Miller revealed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Lebron James treats his health as an investment:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\"He puts a lot of money behind taking care of his body. A lot of people think it's a big expense, but that big expense has allowed him to make a lot more money for a long period.\"<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">James reportedly gets massages, takes ice baths, and receive electro-stimulation. I understand exactly what is going on in the course of a game from both teams.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That means understanding what we want to do and they want to do and things of that nature. It's 90 percent mental for me.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lebron's performance rituals help him become a better leader. When he takes care of himself, he gets into ISP faster. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>LeBron is in good company.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many other athletes similarly make major investments in their health and well being. For example, James Harrison is almost 40 but he has continued to perform well in after returning from retirement. A rarity in sports. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even the younger players on his team <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/20485439\/a-guide-james-harrison-insane-workouts-five-wacky-gifs-2017-nfl-pittsburgh-steelers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">struggle to keep up<\/a> with his legendary Instagram workouts. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How did this \"old man\u201d overshadow his younger teammates? By spending over $350,000 per year on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.com\/photography\/proof\/2018\/february\/james-harrison-nfl-cupping-therapy-football\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\"body work.\"<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/getlighthouse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Screen-Shot-2018-02-24-at-6.39.53-PM.png\" alt=\"high performing leaders take care of their body like Harrison does\" width=\"599\" height=\"384\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harrison told, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nfl.com\/videos\/nfl-360\/0ap3000000771295\/NFL-360-Behind-the-Steel-Curtain-James-Harrison-with-Andrea-Kremer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NFL Network's Andrea Kremer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that \"body work\u201d consists of paying:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An acupuncturist<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A dry-needling person<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A trainer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A doctor<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A masseuse<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A physio-chiro masseur<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Inspired by Tom Brady's desire to play well into his 40s, fellow NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers adopted Brady's diet plan, so he could also play <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/aaron-rodgers-tom-brady-diet-workouts-play-nfl-40s-2017-7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">football in his 40s.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He told ESPN that he dropped dairy for a more vegan-like diet and he limits his meat intake. He also prioritizes recovery by scheduling eight hours of sleep a night. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/2015\/09\/18\/aaron-rodgers-green-bay-packers-cover-story?page=4&amp;devicetype=default\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rodgers told SI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that, \"<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nutrition and flexibility are things that will keep me playing at a high level into my 40s.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\"<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Stable\u00a0leaders have teams that perform better<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like Harrison and Rodgers, high performing leaders invest in improving their overall welfare. Because when you're happier, you perform better.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>When managers are happier, they tend to treat their employees better, increasing the likelihood of project success.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0263786316300291\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i>\"Manager emotional intelligence and project success: The mediating role of job satisfaction and trust,<\/i><\/a><i>\u201d <\/i>researchers tried to determine the effects of manager attitudes on complex projects.<\/p>\n<p>They hypothesized that managers with high emotional intelligence would increase work trust and job satisfaction, causing employees to complete assignments better. The researchers\u00a0examined leadership and project effectiveness of an Australian defense organization with a $5 billion budget. In their study on rats, they found that stressful events caused stem cells to rapidly reproduce into better cells, improving the rats' mental performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So when rats faced similar stressful situations again, they could handle them better. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.unm.edu\/~lkravitz\/Article%20folder\/musclesgrowLK.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">same process happens in muscle growth.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> When muscles undergo trauma or damage, satellite cells work to repair the injured tissue. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cells multiply and fuse into muscle fibers to create new protein stands to improve damaged cords. Thus, making the muscle thicker and stronger. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elite athletes know this. Too much stress creates many problems that will always catch up with you eventually.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the worst of all problems, burnout, is due to chronic stress or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/getlighthouse.com\/blog\/learned-helplessness-employee-engagement-politics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">learned helplessness.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> When managers suffer from anxiety or lack of purpose, their performance and mood tend to decline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2001\/01\/the-making-of-a-corporate-athlete\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\"The Making of a Corporate Athlete,\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Loehr and Schwartz recommend that aspiring high performing leaders should practice something called, \"stress oscillation.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stress oscillation is when a period of rest follows intense, stressful activity.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Learn to rest<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jim Connor, the former president and CEO of FootJoy, had trouble balancing his work and personal life. He consulted Loehr and Schwartz on getting him out of a deep rut:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\"My feelings were muted so I could deal with the emotional pain of life. I had smoothed out all the [change] in my life to such an extent that oscillation [wasn't allowed]. I was not feeling life but repetitively performing it.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Connor was the first to arrive and the last to leave his office every day. However, this had no positive impact on his work performance. It only made him more upset. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After working with Loehr and Schwartz, Connor decided to work at an office location closer to his home a few days a week. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He spent most days at his main office performing at his best, but used his days at the second location to recover. In a similar vein,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">another tactic is positive self-talk. Athletes try to prevent negative attitudes by reminding themselves of their talent and progress. As a result, they become more self-confident.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it may sound odd at first, there's every reason to try these at work. Try visualizing yourself crushing your next big presentation, or giving yourself positive reinforcement before a key task.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>2. Competitive training<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Competitive traning\u00a0is when athletes focus most of their time and effort practicing. They watch videos of themselves and opponents to identify their strengths and weaknesses. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, a Korean badminton player believes that <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.humankinetics.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1123\/tsp.14.1.63\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this strategy<\/a> gives him confidence:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\"When my confidence was lost, even though my physical condition was ok, [I knew] the slump was coming. As a coping strategy, I worked harder and practiced harder than usual. I tried to escape from the slump by having the positive thoughts about how I practiced harder than before.\"<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Studying how others develop software, market, or sell like you do, is a great way to improve yourself to become a high performing leader.<\/p>\n<h3><b>3. Somatic relaxation<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here, athletes try to relax their bodies. They get messages, stretch their sore muscles, and get extra hours of sleep.\u00a0\u00a0Lebron James and James Harrison are major believers in this approach as we discussed earlier.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/getlighthouse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/Screen-Shot-2018-02-24-at-7.15.02-PM.png\" alt=\"high performing leaders relax\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CEO of Moz, Rand Fishkin, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/money.cnn.com\/mostly-human\/silicon-valleys-secret\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">told CNN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that strategies like this aren't promoted enough in Silicon Valley:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\"Sleep is not cool, pregnancy, not cool. It's why he's invested more in himself, and encourages others to do the same.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>3. Hobbies<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some athletes believe that having a fun time decreases their anxiety. They listen to music, watch movies, and read books to feel more at ease.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On his blog<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, SumoMe founder Noah Kagan was honest about <a href=\"https:\/\/okdork.com\/how-to-deal-with-depression\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">his episodes with exhaustion<\/a>. He offered tips on how others could temporarily avoid depression. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of them were hobbies and social outings that can decrease anxiety like dancing, going for a walk, and going to the gym.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Similarly, Buffer founder Joel Gascoigne has been <a href=\"http:\/\/joel.is\/creating-a-sleep-ritual\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an advocate for the power of a daily walk<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\"A\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/KhuramMalik\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">good friend<\/a>\u00a0introduced me to [<a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2opjiBP\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Power of Full Engagement<\/a>], and also helped me craft a new ritual to help me get to sleep at a good hour and in a good state of mind each night...I've adjusted this ritual over time, and it can be simplified to two important parts:<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Disengage<\/strong>: An activity to allow total disengagement from the day's work. <strong>For me, this is going for a 20 minute walk every evening<\/strong> at 9:30pm. This is a wind down period, and allows me to evaluate the day's work, think about the greater challenges, gradually stop thinking about work and reach a state of tiredness.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Avoid re-engaging<\/strong>: After the activity, go straight to bed. Be sure that all devices are in a separate room to the one you sleep (and silent). Once in bed, do not read books which are related to your work in any way. For me, this means reading fiction.\"<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Sometimes, less is more. Taking a few minutes out of your day to properly wind down and turn your mind off work can help you do better work the next day.<\/p>\n<h3><b>5. Social support <\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You're not alone and do not have to feel like you're working without support. Many of the Korean athletes in the study relied on the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\"technical, emotional, and informational support from family, friends, and coaches.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/i><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Years ago, TINT CEO Tim Sae Koo <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@timsaekoo\/staying-sane-in-silicon-valley-stress-and-depression-as-a-ceo-48b30d1bbcd2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published an article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> detailing his burnout in Silicon Valley. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To overcome his depression, he spends time with fellow founders and CEOs to feel less lonely. Also, each year, he takes a vacation with the founders at Buffer to secluded islands to relax his mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether you seek support from friends and family, or others in your industry in similar roles, social support can go a long way.<br \/>\n<\/span><b><\/b><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/getlighthouse.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/pray.jpg\" alt=\"high performing leaders may use prayer to help\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" title=\"\"><\/p>\n<h3><b>6.
